From Charles Cohee Jr.'s advocacy for Freedmen to the establishment of Unity Bank & Trust Company and Boston Bank of Commerce during the civil rights movement, the bank has been at the forefront of economic and social progress. Under the leadership of Chairman and CEO Kevin Cohee and President and COO Teri Williams since 1995, OneUnited Bank has expanded its impact.
In 1999, it made history by becoming the nation's largest Black-owned bank through the merger of Boston Bank of Commerce, Peoples National Bank of Commerce, Founders National Bank of Commerce, and Family Savings Bank. Recognized for its commitment, the bank won the first of 14 Bank Enterprise Awards for community development lending.
In 2005, OneUnited Bank pioneered digital banking, launching the first Black-owned digital platform and mobile banking. The bank has consistently stood for justice and equality, evident in its response to incidents like the Trayvon Martin shooting.
2020 brought innovative digital services, including the 2 Day Early Pay and CashPlease programs. In 2022, the bank expanded its physical presence with a branch in Compton, CA, and a new HQ building in Roxbury, MA, reinforcing its commitment to Black communities.
