The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) is a civil rights organization founded in 1957 with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as its first president. Rooted in the Black church and the philosophy of nonviolence, it played a central role in the civil rights movement — from the Birmingham campaign to the Selma to Montgomery marches — and continues to advocate for civil and human rights, justice, and nonviolent social change.
