Founded in 1796 and headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AME Zion) Church is a historically Black Methodist denomination known as the “Freedom Church” for its role in the abolitionist movement — counting Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth among its members. It continues its ministry of worship, education, and social justice worldwide.
